Santa in Kenya
Santa Kenya!

In a similar post, I spared no detail in explaining how Christmas is particularly adored in my country, Kenya. During this time, families come together to commemorate the birth of a Jewish son, Jesus Christ, who would eventually give up his life for the salvation of a sinful world. Peace on earth.

This Christmas is different for me in many ways;

Being a football zealot, I am almost moved to tears seeing Lionel Messi, from Argentina, wearing the bisht — an Arab robe bearing the highest level of respect and admiration — lift the prestigious 6-kilo golden trophy in his hands! The World Cup trophy was heavily contested by 32 teams and only one got to take it with them back home from the Qatari desert. The Argentinian captain has won the trophy for his country this once after participating in the tournament for nearly two decades! This is such a phenomenal achievement for him and his supporters.

While making my usual morning round to Carrefour Supermarket in the Two Rivers Mall, I notice a rather unusually long queue. I encounter shoppers — young and old — dragging hefty carts filled with all manner of merchandise ranging from cooking oil, wheat flour, and sugar, among others. From their loud chatter, it is apparent that this won’t be the last time I’d be seeing their faces in that supermarket. From an attendant, I gather that the supermarket is offering massive discounts on household goods as a way to give back to society during this Christmas season. The attendant was overly generous with information and I barely escaped from their endless chatter. Christmas bears euphoria to most!

With lots of cooking activities expected, the survival of most goats, chickens, and probably turkeys too would — once again — be at stake. From long-lost relatives to toddlers, dine-ins and dine-outs would be rampant throughout this period. That said, I implore anyone reading this not to be oblivious to the suffering of the less fortunate, but rather offer any assistance whenever possible. And yeah, we can all be Santa in Kenya.

Safe travels, enjoy responsibly, and make this Christmas merry! Happy New Year!
